Mission Green Earth(Led by the The United Nations and Art of Living Organization)

The world is awakening to Global Warming just as it is beginning to singe us. Before our eyes, our planet is losing its greenery and browning rapidly. Rivers are shriveling up, ice belts are shrinking and there is water shortage all around us. It is a crisis that is not staring us in the future but glaring at us right now in the present.

Political leaders, celebrities and international institutions worldwide are doing all they can to make a difference. However, this difference will be visible only when each and every one of us takes part actively.

Mission Green Earth, led by the United Nations and The Art of Living (AOL) Organization and backed by global leaders from both developed and developing nations have pledged the Climate Change this year through the Tree Plantation Agenda as their the 7th Millennium Development Goal. To instigate this, there is a target to plant and nurture at least a 100 million trees from July to October 16th, 2008.

If you are among those who wish to make a difference, this is your chance to do so. Join Mission Green Earth by buying and planting trees through your generous donation and sponsorships.

How to join us

Simply donate a small amount of Bt100 for two plants. Join AOL and UNEP on Sat, Oct 11th at Ratchaburi where you can plant the saplings yourself. In case you can’t make it on that day, we will be happy to plant it on your behalf. Cost of the plants is inclusive of 2 years maintenance. Please call to confirm your visit to Ratchaburi on Oct 11th. Buy as many as you want. The more, the merrier Mother Earth will be.

This offer is open for one and all.

Thai PM Samak Announces EmergencyPrime Minister of Thailand, Samak Sundaravej declared a state of emergency in the capital Bangkok on Tuesday morning, after a fight on Monday night between pro and anti-government supporters which left one person dead and dozens injured.

Tuesday, 9 a.m the Prime Minister announced that the state of emergency is used for peace of the country and the rule would not last long.

"No one has the right to do such a thing as they have done," said Mr Samak, in a televised press conference.

"I had no other choice but to declare a state of emergency in Bangkok in order to solve the problem for once and for all" added he.

The state of emergency announced through all Thai TV stations does not include prohibiting people from leaving their houses, meaning people can still go to work. It includes prohibiting gathering of more than five people, allow authorities to evict people from any place or prohibit them from entering a place and prohibits news publicity in a way that could instigate violence.

The state of emergency also allows the authorities to detain suspects for seven days and would prohibit people from making illegal entries into government offices.

The clash overnight between the pro and anti-government supporters left one man dead from severe head injuries, four were in serious condition, two with gunshot wounds and 37 people were send to hospitals.

Regarding the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, students attended in schools this morning were to be sent back to their homes and 436 schools will be closed for three days following state of emergency.

India and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Thursday concluded a free trade pact in merchandise goods that will pave the way for a free trade area in the region by 2016, officials said. “It is an important milestone for our region,” India’s Commerce Minister Kamal Nath told a press conference here after concluding the far-reaching pact with Singapore’s Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang.

“It took six years for India to understand the sensitivities of Asean, and for the Asean to understand the sensitivities of India,” said Kamal Nath, explaining why the process took so long. A framework pact has been signed in 2003.

The formal free trade agreement will be signed at the Asean-India Summit in Bangkok in December. The grouping comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The agreement will give Asean companies an enhanced market access to India as well as reduced tariffs in some key exports like palm oil, crude, tea and pepper.

Indian Tiranga"An NRI , no, not me! My grandfather came from India but I was 'born in the US' and I'm an American," said Neil whose legal name is Sunil. "I have nothing in common with an Indian who lives in India. Maybe he has something in common with me, as he is trying to live the American lifestyle."

But what about your customs, food, movies? "Customs like marriage....look, my brother met an Italian while studying medicine and he got married to her. I have a Hispanic girlfriend and am learning Spanish right now - not Hindi. Food? Yeah, I like curry but I also like pizza, so what? Bollywood movies...no, not my scene."

Don't you want to visit India, the land of your forefathers especially when some young Americans are going there to work in this economic slowdown? "Maybe, I will visit India for a holiday but cannot even think of working there...the work culture is quite different. Couldn't survive there."

The America-born Indian seems radical but not uncommon.

British Indians have similar but less critical views. Ricky, an upwardly mobile engineer, has forgotten India since his father came to Britain in the 1950s.

"I went to India as a child of four and it was terrible," he says. "I don't want to go there again - not even for a holiday in Goa. I prefer Dubai and may even buy a flat there. Yes, I like Indian food and enjoy Bollywood films and want my daughters to marry an Indian - just like any other father of any other community here."

A Picture of Nishita ShahNishita Shah , 28, an Indian origin businesswoman from Thailand, golfer Tiger Woods and Elon Musk, co-founder of online payment processor PayPal figure on Forbes’ list of next-generation billionaires. Besides Shah, managing director of Thailand’s diversified GP Group, on the list are Hollywood actor Tyler Perry, Kenji Kasahara, creator of Japan’s leading portal Mixi, and Michael and Xochi Birch, who started Bebo, a social networking site.

“The world’s current crop of billionaires has plenty of money but not much youth,” the US business magazine said, noting the average age of the 1,125 people on Forbes’ list of the world’s wealthiest is 61.

“The diversity of this group shows you can’t predict what industry the next billionaire will come from, but these people also have something in common,” Forbes said. “Even though they’ve accumulated more than enough money to retire in luxury, they aren’t packing up for the Hamptons.”

Glamorous Nishita Shah is one of the richest people in Thailand because of her stake in her family’s sprawling business empire with an estimated net worth at $375 million. When the stunning heiress is not poring over financial reports or gracing the pages of Thai magazines, she’s planning her upcoming fashion line, Forbes said.

“My dad said I could study anything I wanted as long as it was business,” Shah who holds a business degree from Boston University was quoted as saying.

Shah is largest individual shareholder and director of Precious Shipping, Thailand’s biggest dry-bulk shipper boasting a fleet of 44 ships. Her father Kirit founded the group in 1989 and took it public 1993. The 140-year-old family business is booming. Profits more than doubled in past three years.

Sushil Kumar with his Bronze MedalFreestyle wrestler Sushil Kumar scored a stunning win over Kazakhstan’s Leonid Spiridonov in the extra 30-second period after the third round of the 66 kg category to clinch a surprise bronze medal, when everyone had lost hope after his first round loss in the morning. It was India’s second medal of the Games, its first since 1952 in wrestling. It is also only the second time - the first being 1952 - that India have won more than one medal at the same Olympics.

In the morning, Sushil lost to Andriy Stadnik of Ukraine on points. But his slender hopes hung on the results of his conqueror, Stadnik, who went on to reach the final, thereby giving Sushil an extra lease of life as all wrestlers losing to the two finalists then contest the Repechage.Sushil won all his three bouts in the Repechage to clinch a stunning bronze for India.

“I thought I could have won the bout in the morning, but luck was later with me as the Ukraine wrestler reached the final and I got into the Repechage. It was still not easy and fighting three bouts in just over one hour is very tiring and tough,” said the 25-year-old Sushil.
